Telling Stories Through My Lens

I'm Matt Cheok, a travel photographer and filmmaker (and once-upon-a-time lawyer) from Sydney, Australia, but now very much based overseas, wherever my adventures take me.

Here you’ll find a selection of my favourite prints from my journey so far, as I continue to dive deeper, further and capture the beauty that exists on our planet.

I still have no idea where this adventure is going, but it’s taking me to places I would never have dreamed of.

Thank you for supporting what I do.

SUNDRENCHED GREEN

Captured one afternoon inside the grounds of Mexico City's giant park, Chapultepec. I've always admired the play of light among the trees and leafy foliage as the day draws to a close.

STORY BEHIND THE PRINT

In The Forests of Almaty

After enduring the challenge of 842 stairs from Medo Ice Rink, I was rewarded with this majestic mountain backdrop. And, for the locals in Almaty, this is just a routine morning walking route. As a side note, I returned here several times during my three-month stay, attempting to run up the stairs and never once reached the summit without stopping.

STORY BEHIND THE PRINT

The Land Before Time

West Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region is filled with hidden treasures, dramatic canyons, mysterious underground mosques, sacred pilgrimages and ancient necropolises. But what makes it even more unbelievable is the fact that the very surface beneath your feet was once covered by the vast Tethys Ocean. As you explore the area, you'll come across fossilised shells and dramatic rock formations that rise high into the sky above the never-ending plains. This breathtaking landscape was one of my favourite sights I encountered during my 6-month hitchhiking adventure across Central Asia.

STORY BEHIND THE PRINT

Sunset in Semey

Arriving in Semey after a 19-hour train ride, I did not intend to find myself at the Irtysh River at sunset. But fate had other plans. By chance, I ran into a woman on the street whom I had messaged on Couchsurfing for accommodation. Even though she hadn't had a chance to respond, she recognised me and offered me a place to stay. As it turned out, her favourite spot in town was at the river's edge, and I spent the afternoon submerged in the water. I can now see why she recommended it to me - the sunset was absolutely breathtaking.
