The Land Before Time

West Kazakhstan’s Mangystau region is filled with hidden treasures, dramatic canyons, mysterious underground mosques, sacred pilgrimages and ancient necropolises. But what makes it even more unbelievable is the fact that the very surface beneath your feet was once covered by the vast Tethys Ocean. As you explore the area, you'll come across fossilised shells and rock formations that rise high into the sky above the never-ending plains. This breathtaking landscape was one of my favourite sites I encountered during my 6-month hitchhiking adventure across Central Asia.
