Penguin Hut

Penguin Hut

Petermann Island is one of those places where the history of human exploration and the local wildlife completely overlap. This bright orange hut was built by Argentina in 1955, and it still stands today surrounded by one of the southernmost Gentoo penguin colonies.

I caught this lone penguin surveying the rocks with the hut and the Argentine flag in the background. It's a perfect example of how the penguins have just reclaimed these human outposts as their own backyard.
